Assessing and Understanding

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN)

Presented by Elizabeth Norton, PhD.

Tuesday, April 25, 2023

7:00 - 8:30 PM

Zoom

Fluent reading depends on a complex set of cognitive processes that must work together in perfect concert.  Rapid automatized naming (RAN) tasks provide insight into this system, acting as a microcosm of the processes involved in reading.  An understanding of how and why to assess RAN can support early identification of reading difficulties and serve as a key indicator for treatment planning for students with varying reading abilitiesIn this presentation, Dr. Norton will share her research on RAN, the characteristics of a RAN task as differentiated from other measures, the theoretical basis and the research evidence for the relationship between RAN and reading, and the ways in which brain data can provide insights into RAN and reading.

Dr. Elizabeth Spencer Norton, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern University and directs the Language, Education and Reading Neuroscience ("LEARN") Lab which uses behavioral and brain measures to understanding reading, language, and neurodevelopmental disorders.  She is particularly interested in understanding individual differences and working toward early identification and intervention for language and reading disabilities.  She has also led three major NIH grants and has published over 45 peer-reviewed scientific papers. For more information on Dr. Norton's work, please visit her lab website
